The Team Breakdowns

Texas

Texas is by far the most talented team in the Big 12 this season. Quinn Ewers is a future franchise QB in the NFL, the receiving corps is Top 5 in the country, the O-line is stacked and the defense is full of blue-chippers. There are officially no more excuses for Steve Sarkisian in 2023. If Texas doesn’t win the Big 12 in their final year in the league, The Longhorns and their rabid boosters should consider moving on from Sark before joining the SEC next season.

Kansas State

K-State is one of the toughest teams in the country, mentally and physically. The trench play is excellent and they have a star at Left Guard in Cooper Beebe. Chris Kleiman might be the best coach in the Big 12, and Will Howard is going to take another step forward at QB in 2023. The Wildcats going to play for a Big 12 title for the second straight season.

Oklahoma Quarterback Dillon Gabriel (Photo: Chris Jones/USA TODAY Sports).

Oklahoma

The Oklahoma offense will be electric in 2023. Dillon Gabriel is an above average College Football QB, and the offense is still littered with talent. Jalil Farooq is one of the better receivers in the Big 12 and one of the more underrated players in the country. I think the defense will be improved under Venables in year two, but they still won’t be good. The schedule is incredibly soft, so I have the Sooners going 9-3, but I question whether they have the right coach in Norman long term.

Texas Tech defenders celebrate a turnover against Ole Miss in the 2022 Texas Bowl (Photo: Troy Taormina/USA TODAY Sports).

Texas Tech

I’m torn on the Texas Tech Red Raiders heading into the 2023 season. Tyler Shough is a really good QB, and Joey McGuire has brought some real energy and excitement to the program. On the other hand, the numbers on paper in 2022, particularly defensively, were frightening. I’ve seen many people projecting a 9 or 10 win season for the Red Raiders and a trip to the Big 12 Title game. I don’t see that happening, but I’m still projecting improvement and 8 wins this season. There are some tricky road spots on the schedule for TTU against inferior competition. If they take care of business, they will be a very solid, borderline top 25 team in 2023.

TCU Head Coach Sonny Dykes (Photo: 247 Sports Archives).

TCU

I think it’s safe to say the Horned Frogs aren’t going to make it back to the National Championship in 2023. Sonny Dykes has proven in just one season that he’s an excellent coach and fits well with the culture in Fort Worth. Kendal Briles comes in as OC to replace Garrett Riley, and Chandler Morris replaces Max Duggan at QB. I think the offense will still be very good, but I question the weapons with the losses of Kendre Miller and Quentin Johnston. Overall, I think TCU will resort back to a normal season for them, which to me is a rock solid 8-4.

Baylor Quarterback Blake Shapen (Photo: Baylor Athletics).

Baylor

This Baylor team is another one of the more underrated teams in the country. Dave Aranda is an excellent coach, and he’s assembled an excellent staff in Waco including Jeff Grimes at OC. They had a down season in 2022 with injuries at the QB position, but still made a bowl game. This came after they won the Big 12 in 2021. Conservatively, I have Baylor at 8-4, but I think the ceiling for the Bears is 10 wins in 2023.

UCF Quarterback John Rhys Plumlee surrounded by teammates (Photo: Julio Aguilar/Getty Images).

UCF

UCF is by far the best and the most Power Five ready of the four new schools heading to the Big 12 this season. John Rhys Plumlee is an inconsistent QB through the air but he’s a dynamic weapon rushing the football. Gus Malzahn is a great head coach and will offer consistency and stability for the Knights as they enter the league. The offense has major boom potential, and there’s some big time talent on the defensive line as well (Josh Celiscar, Lee Hunter, Ricky Barber). This will be a bowl eligible football team in 2023.

Oklahoma State Head Coach Mike Gundy (Photo: Sarah Phipps/The Oklahoman).

Oklahoma State

Mike Gundy might be the most under appreciated coach in the country. His reign of consistency in Stillwater is nearly unparalleled across programs of similar pedigree in College Football. This 2023 roster has been absolutely gutted by the transfer portal. With that being said, I think there’s a clear and stable floor for Oklahoma State with Gundy at the helm. Alan Bowman comes in at QB and has shown that he has a semblance of an arm at previous stops (Michigan, Texas Tech). Mike Gundy and a QB with a pulse should be enough for 7 wins in 2023, no matter how ugly the rest of the roster looks.

BYU Tight End Isaac Rex catches a touchdown against Arizona State (Photo: Shafkat Anowar/Desert News).

BYU

Kedon Slovis isn’t a very good QB and the BYU defense wasn’t very good in 2022. I don’t think things will be much different defensively in 2023. Aidan Robbins is a physical monster and will have some success at the RB position, and Isaac Rex is a terrific option at TE. Kalani Sitake has his work cut out for him this season as he navigates a new era of BYU football, but I think he’ll be able to narrowly get this team to bowl eligibility. The BYU home field is unique and will present a challenge for unfamiliar Big 12 foes. This should lead to the Cougars picking off one or two superior conference opponents.

West Virginia

Neal Brown will not have a job by the time the 2023 season is over in Morgantown. With that being said, WVU’s roster on paper is better than many fans and media members are leading on. CJ Donaldson is an absolute stud at RB and the offensive line is above average by Big 12 standards. The Mountaineers will be able to run the ball. The defense was atrocious in 2022, but this defensive staff had shown in prior years that they know what they’re doing. I think that the schedule sets up for WVU to start out 1-4, fire Neal Brown during the Bye Week, then play better in the second half of the season.

Kansas Quarterback Jalon Daniels throws on the run against TCU in 2022 (Photo: Kansas Athletics).

Kansas

Kansas is one of the most collectively overrated teams by the fans and media heading into the 2023 season. Jalon Daniels is an excellent QB and Lance Leipold has done a more than admirable job rebuilding the program. The offense returns virtually everyone of significance and should be excellent again. With that being said, the Jayhawks went 6-7 last season because the defense was absolutely atrocious. This will be no different in 2023. I have the Jayhawks winning 6 games again this season, and they should be in quite a few shootouts once again.

Cincinnati Defensive Tackle Dontay Corleone pumps up the crowd (Photo: Jeff Dean/AP).

Cincinnati

Scott Satterfield was an uninspiring HC hire for the Bearcats after they lost Luke Fickell. He failed at Louisville with quite a bit of talent, and I think he will be very mediocre at Cincinnati. The defense still has some nice pieces in 2023. Dontay Corleone and Jowon Briggs are studs on the defensive line. Offensively, I think this will be a disaster. Emory Jones is not a good quarterback and despite him having some intriguing weapons in Dee Wiggins and Florida transfer Xzavier Henderson, I’m skeptical he’ll be able to use them effectively. I have the Bearcats going 5-7, but I think the floor for this team is 3-9.

Houston Head Coach Dana Holgorsen (Photo: Stew Milne/AP).

Houston

I think there’s a very real possibility that the Houston Cougars move on from Dana Holgorsen at the conclusion of this season. They lost a ton of talent to graduation, the NFL and the the transfer portal and the Cougars are going to be in the basement of the Big 12 in their inaugural season in the league. Donovan Smith is another actively bad quarterback that is going to cause Houston problems. Houston is going to get bludgeoned in the trenches on both sides of the ball against Power Five competition. I don’t have a team projected to go winless in conference play in the Big 12 this season, but I think it’s a possibility for Houston.

Iowa State Cornerback T.J. Tampa lines up against Baylor in 2022 (Photo: Iowa State Athletics).

Iowa State

The Iowa State Cyclones are going to be incredibly tough to watch this season. The offense is going to be horrific… whether JJ Kohl or Rocco Becht starts at QB does not matter. The defense is still solid and has some talent, and Matt Cambell is a good coach, but I think the offense will be such a tire fire that they finish last in the Big 12 in 2023.
