The Team Breakdowns

Oregon Quarterback Bo Nix (Photo: Brett Davis/ USA TODAY Sports).

Oregon

The talent that Oregon has accumulated via recruiting and the transfer portal is being underrated nationally. I think the Ducks will be much improved in the trenches in Dan Lanning’s second season, and I think that Bo Nix will be consistently excellent again. The skill position talent is electric, as the Ducks bring back Bucky Irving and Troy Franklin. I think Oregon will be in the playoff discussion late into the 2023 season.

USC

Caleb Williams is the best player in college football and USC very well may be the best offense in the country in 2023. Unfortunately for the Trojans, they will lose multiple games and miss out on the College Football Playoff again this season because they can’t tackle a folding chair. DC Alex Grinch will be fired after this season, but the damage will have already been done.

Washington

Michael Penix is absolutely electric and the receivers are some of the best in the country. Kalen DeBoer is a terrific coach and he’s surrounded himself with an elite staff, including OC Ryan Grubb. Washington will be right in the mix in the PAC-12 again in 2023, but I think they miss out on the title game/playoff conversation because of some defensive inconsistencies.

Utah Head Coach Kyle Whittingham coaches in the Rose Bowl vs. OSU in 2022 (Photo: Rick Egan/Salt Lake Tribune).

Utah

Utah will be tough and physical as always in 2023, but the schedule is daunting. I have the Utes losing a non-conference game at Baylor in Week 2, and I think they also drop a couple of conference games. Overall, I expect the PAC-12 to cannibalize itself this season, and Utah will be a victim of that. If Cam Rising is healthy, Utah certainly could contend for a PAC-12 crown again in 2023, but I don’t think they will.

Oregon State Running Back Damien Martinez (Photo: 247 Sports).

Oregon State

D.J. Uiagalelei is a clear upgrade over anything the Oregon State Beavers had at QB last season, and Jonathan Smith is a terrific head coach. The running game will be incredible again, powered by a tough offensive line and the impressive elusiveness of RB Damien Martinez. The defense will be stout again, and it will result in an impressive swan song at the power level for Beaver football.

UCLA Head Coach Chip Kelly (Photo: Getty Images/Steph Chambers).

UCLA

Chip Kelly consistently churns out Top 20 offenses in the country, and 2023 will be no different. Whether it’s Ethan Garbers or five-star freshman Dante Moore at QB, the offense will be prolific once again. The defense will be bad, but they’ll improve thanks to a bevy of returning production. The schedule is very manageable by PAC-12 standards, which will lead to the Bruins accumulating nine wins in 2023.

Arizona

The Arizona offense will be high-powered and fun to watch with Jayden De Laura at QB and some intriguing skill position talent. Jedd Fisch is building something in Tucson, and the Wildcats will have some momentum heading into the Big 12 next season. With that being said, the schedule is tough this season and I think they’ll just miss out on a bowl in 2023.

Cal Running Back Jaydn Ott plunges for the end zone against UC Davis in 2022 (Photo: Jorge Birelas).

California

Cal will be one of the most boring teams in the country in 2023. The defense will be solid, but the offense will be atrocious once again. I don’t think they’ll be in the basement by Power Five terms, but they have the potential to be. I think Cal goes 5-7, but anything less than that could spell the end of Justin Wilcox’s tenure.

New Colorado Head Coach Deion Sanders (Photo: Matthew Stockman/Getty Images).

Colorado

Deion Sanders will be the topic of many headlines this season, but the on-field product is going to be horrific in Boulder. I have the Buffs winning three games this season, and I think the ceiling is five.

Stanford Tight End Benjamin Yurosek (Photo: Stanford University Athletics).

Stanford

Benjamin Yurosek is a quality tight end, and Troy Taylor is a sharp football mind, but the talent just isn’t there for the Cardinal. It will be another year in the PAC-12 basement for Stanford in 2023.
