The Team Breakdowns
Big Ten East
Ohio State
At some point, talent just has to win out for Ohio State. The Buckeyes nearly climbed the mountaintop last season despite losing to Michigan for the second season in a row. If it weren’t for some questionable clock management by Ryan Day late against Georgia, followed by a wickedly shanked kick from Noah Ruggles, the Bucks top the Dawgs and likely go on to beat TCU to win the National Championship.
Instead, OSU is starting out behind Michigan, at least by most preseason predictions and standards, for the 2023 season. While I see why many are trusting the steadiness of the Michigan roster and staff, especially with the change at quarterback for Ohio State, I don’t agree. I’m riding with the upside and the talent of the Buckeyes and I’m picking them to win a Big Ten title in 2023.

Penn State
On paper, this is the most talented Penn State team that James Franklin has ever had. With the departure of the solid, reliable Sean Clifford, the Nittany Lions welcome in the burly, cannon-armed Drew Allar to start at quarterback. While there’s no guarantee that Allar will live up to full potential, the upside for PSU is undoubtedly higher with the five-star true sophomore at the helm.
The rest of the PSU roster is stacked. The Nittany Lions have one of the best RB duos in the country with Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, an elite pair of tight ends in Theo Johnson and Tyler Warren, and one of the best tackles in the country in LT Olu Fashanu. Defensively, Adisa Isaac and Chop Robinson are studs at the edge positions, Curtis Jacobs and Abdul Carter might be the best LB duo in the Big Ten, and the secondary is bolstered by two future NFL cornerbacks in Kalen King and Johnny Dixon.
I’m picking Franklin and Penn State to finally break through and get to 11-1 this season. The talent on this team is buzz-worthy, and the Nittany Lions get Michigan at home this year, which is enough of an advantage for me to give PSU a slight edge.

Michigan
The margin between the Top 3 teams in the Big Ten is razor thin. I have OSU, PSU and Michigan all power rated as top five teams in the country (OSU 2, UM 4, PSU 5). All three teams are far and away the best in the Big Ten, and I believe that each of them going 11-1 with wins/losses against each other is very possible. With that being said, I’m picking UM to take a step back and go 10-2.
To me, Michigan is the team out of that group with the least amount of questions, but also with the least amount of upside. J.J. McCarthy is solid, but not elite. The lines of scrimmage should be terrific again and the coaching is excellent. My Big Ten predictions are based on upside. The talent on OSU’s and PSU’s rosters come with upsides that are higher than the ceiling for Michigan. I think this is the year where the high-end talent, especially of the Buckeyes, finally catches back up with Michigan.

Maryland
The Maryland Terrapins should be relatively prolific offensively this season with the return of QB Taulia Tagovailoa. The skill position pieces are intriguing with Roman Hemby at RB and Jeshaun Jones and Kaden Prather at WR. Four-star sophomore Shaleak Knotts is another intriguing talent at wideout, and the offensive line is good enough to hold up against most competition. Mike Locksley has recruited very well by program standards, and has done well in the transfer portal as of late.
For Maryland to exceed expectations this season (win more than 7 or 8 games), the Terrapins have to sure up the defense. There are intriguing individual pieces at all three levels, but the coaching schematics last season were questionable at best. I don’t think Maryland will pick off one of the Top 3 in the East, but they’ll earn a bid to a bowl game for the third consecutive season nonetheless.

Michigan State
Michigan State is stuck in a very tough place as both a team and a program. The Spartans are paying Mel Tucker $9.5 million per year… and in 2022 he and the staff massively underachieved. I have major questions about the staff’s longterm ability to meet expectations in an increasingly difficult league. It’s hard to be optimistic about the path for a team to succeed when they might have the wrong coach at the helm, especially when that coach’s contract is acting as an anchor for the program itself.
This Michigan State roster is solid in spots. The front seven should be much improved and the talent in the secondary is intriguing, but I have little faith that the defensive coaching will help the talent live up to potential. QB Noah Kim is a major question mark… and if the offensive play-calling is bad, the floor could really fall out from under this team because of the difficulty of the schedule. With all that being said, I have MSU squeaking into a bowl game in 2023. I’m not sure the future is bright in East Lansing, but the 2023 season on its own shouldn’t be enough to tank the Tucker Era.

Rutgers
Do Rutgers and their fanbase enjoy being in the Big Ten? There’s been some excitement with the basketball program, but RU football has been nothing short of soulless and dismal since joining the league. I do think this team is slightly better on paper than Indiana, but I have them losing that game because it’s on the road. This team could be somewhat pesky, but the upside is pretty low because the QB play is and will continue to be subpar. Better luck next year to the Scarlet Knights.

Wisconsin
Wisconsin is going to be one of the most intriguing teams to watch over the first several weeks of the season. Luke Fickell is an excellent coach and he brings in a tremendous defensive staff captained by DC Mike Tressel. The Badgers will run Tressel’s signature 3-3-5, and it should be formidable right off rip. I have few if any questions about the defense for UW.
The intrigue for the Badgers is going to come on the offensive side. Fickell brought in Phil Longo as his OC to run a hybrid air raid system (lovingly nicknamed the “dairy raid” this preseason). At quarterback, they turn to SMU transfer Tanner Mordecai, who can really sling it. They bring back the most under-appreciated and prolific RB duo in the Big Ten (and maybe the country) in Braelon Allen and Chez Mellusi. Ultimately, I think this Wisconsin offense.. and team in general.. gets closer to its ceiling than floor in 2023. I believe in the QB, I believe in the defense, and mostly, I believe in Fickell and the staff to succeed out of the gate.

Iowa
The Hawkeyes are one of the most disrespected and underrated teams in the country heading into 2023. While everyone pokes fun and talks about the anemic offense the Hawkeyes run, no one seems to point out the fact that they still won 8 games last season. Do I think that the offensive coaching is good? Hell no. Should Brian Ferentz still be the OC for this team? Absolutely not. With that being said, Cade McNamara is a massive upgrade over Spencer Petras at QB. It’s been understated by the fans and media how atrocious Spencer Petras truly was. McNamara brings some upside. Adding Kaleb Brown and Erick All at WR and TE is meaningful. This offense will be better in 2023.
The defense will be stout as always under the tutelage of an elite DC in Phil Parker. Iowa has elite players at all three levels including Joe Evans and Deontae Craig on the D-line, Nick Jackson (transfer from UVA) at LB, and All-America candidates Cooper DeJean and Xavier Nwankpa in the secondary. I gave Wisconsin the edge to win the West this season because they host Iowa, but the margin between the two (much like the top 3 in the East) is razor thin.

Minnesota
Collectively as media and fans, we know what Minnesota is under P.J. Fleck. They’re physical, mentally tough, rugged defensively, and the definition of solid. This will be no different in 2023. The defense should be fundamentally sound again under DC Joe Rossi, with All-Big Ten caliber players at all three levels.
Offensively, I think Minnesota will take a slight step back with the losses of QB Tanner Morgan and RB Mo Ibrahim. I still think the Gophers will run the ball relatively well, but Athan Kaliakmanis is a raw talent at QB and there will be some growing pains. I don’t see another nine win season in Minneapolis because the schedule is difficult, but I have Minnesota graded as a very solid team once again in 2023.

Illinois
Bret Bielema is one of the most underrated coaches in College Football. He’s rebuilt a perennial Big Ten doormat in Illinois into a formidable squad that looks to be a stout defensive unit once again in 2023. We’ll see how the defense adjusts to losing DC Ryan Walters (Purdue HC), but I tend to think they’ll be just fine. Defensive linemen Johnny Newton and Keith Randolph are absolute forces up front and comprise one of the better defensive fronts in the country.
Offensively, I think Illinois will take a step back from where they were in 2022. Tommy Devito was a steady hand at QB. Ole Miss transfer Luke Altymyer comes in and I think he will be incosistent, especially early. Chase Brown was a real difference maker at RB for the Illini and I’m not confident they’ve successfully replaced him. The schedule is tricky, especially early, but I trust Bielema to navigate early difficulties and lead this team back to a bowl game in 2023.

Nebraska
Matt Rhule will be successful in rebuilding the Nebraska Cornhuskers, but it’s going to take some time. I’m not confident that Nebraska is capable of reaching the heights that they’ve been to as a program ever again, but that’s a different conversation for a different day. I actually expect Georgia Tech transfer QB Jeff Sims to excel in Lincoln this season. I think he will make some great plays and win the Huskers some games.
My question with Nebraska lies in the trenches… on both sides of the ball. Nebraska was pushed around at the lines of scrimmage during the Frost era, and I don’t think Rhule currently has the jimmies and the joes to take massive strides in that department in season one. Nebraska will be improved this season, but it’s going to take a couple of recruiting cycles for Rhule to accrue a roster ready to do anything more than make it to a bowl game.

Purdue
The Ryan Walters era in West Lafayette kicks off with an incredibly difficult Big Ten schedule. The league draw this season did the Boilermakers no favors, as they get Ohio State and Michigan in the division crossover. Purdue also plays two Power Five opponents in the non-conference (at Virginia Tech, vs. Syracuse).
There’s some intriguing talent on this team, but there isn’t enough of it. Hudson Card comes over from Texas to play quarterback, and he’ll operate in a hybrid air raid system with Graham Harrell coming in as the OC. I think Purdue is more than capable of picking off a couple of superior Big Ten West foes, but overall I expect year one to be difficult for Ryan Walters. I wouldn’t be surprised if this team makes a bowl at 6-6, but for now I have them missing out on the postseason at 5-7.

Northwestern
After a tumultuous, scandal-riddled offseason that led to the termination of longtime Head Coach Pat Fitzgerald, there’s really not much to say about the Northwestern Wildcats on the field heading into the 2023 season. This team is going to be one of the three worst teams in Power Five football and will be virtually unwatchable for most of the season. I feel for the players and the rest of the staff that Fitz had brought in to coach this season, particularly interim headman and DC David Braun. This is a dismal situation and will play out on the field as such.
