Georgia

From top to bottom, the Dawgs have the best roster in college football. The new QB (Carson Beck) and OC (Mike Bobo) are question marks, but the schedule is as manageable as it gets in the SEC. Georgia will be right in the thick of the playoff mix again in 2023.

Tennessee Head Coach Josh Heupel and Quarterback Joe Milton celebrate a 2022 Orange Bowl Victory over Clemson (Photo: Caitie McMekin/USA TODAY-Sports).

Tennessee

Jumbo Joe Milton has a cannon of an arm, but can he replicate the accuracy of Hendon Hooker in the short and intermediate throws that are critical to keeping Josh Heupel’s turbo offense running? If he reaches full potential, this will be a playoff team. My prediction is that they fall just short of that ceiling for the second straight season.

Kentucky Wide Receivers Barion Brown and Tayvion Robinson (Photo: Jordan Prather/USA TODAY-Sports).

Kentucky

Devin Leary and the Kentucky Wildcats are one of the three or four most underrated teams heading into the 2023 season. Leary is a better college quarterback than Will Levis ever was, and bringing Liam Coen back at OC is a slam dunk. The defense is always dependable, and Mark Stoops and the staff is excellent. Conservatively, I have the Wildcats at 8-4 this season. However, I think 9-3 and a 10th win in a bowl game is a real possibility for this team.

Florida Running Back Trevor Etienne celebrates with teammates after scoring a touchdown against USF in 2022 (Photo: John Raoux/AP).

Florida

Graham Mertz is not a good quarterback, but the Gators should be able to run the ball with two dynamic backs in Trevor Etienne and Montrell Johnson and their maulers on the offensive line. While I don’t see a ceiling of 8 or 9 wins for Billy Napier and co. in 2023, I don’t think the floor is 3-9 like I’ve seen in many predictions. This team will beat Vanderbilt this season and squeak their way to a bowl game.

South Carolina Quarterback Spencer Rattler (Photo: Matt Pendleton/USA TODAY-Sports).

South Carolina

Spencer Rattler is too inconsistent for this team to reach 8 wins again in 2023, and I don’t trust that Dowell Loggains was the right hire at OC to limit the negativities in Rattler’s game. The defense has a lot of impressive names and athletes, but the Gamecocks need to get tougher in the trenches.

South Carolina couldn’t run the ball or stop the run in 2022, and I don’t expect that to drastically change this season. Despite a slight step back, I still think Shane Beamer gets the Gamecocks to a bowl in 2023.

Missouri

If this Missouri team had even average QB play by SEC standards, they would be a force. Blake Baker is a stud DC and there are freaks on all three levels of the defense. Ty’Ron Hopper is one of the best linebackers in the country and the CB duo of Kris Abrams-Draine and Ennis Rakestraw is formidable. At the end of the day, Eli Drinkwitz will be Mr. 6-6 again in 2023 because Brady Cook… or Jake Garcia… or Sam Horn are not the answers at the quarterback position.

Vanderbilt Wide Receiver Will Sheppard (Photo: Jordan Prather/USA TODAY-Sports).

Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt is going to regress from where they finished in the SEC last season. AJ Swann is a solid QB and they have dudes at WR, but 2 SEC victories is not in the cards for the Commodores this season. The trench play is not up to par and the offensive run game is going to be a major issue. I do think Vandy goes undefeated in the non-conference though, which would put them above their season win total of 3.5.

Alabama Defensive Tackle Jaheim Oatis celebrates with teammates after a tackle against Arkansas (Photo: Alabama athletics).

Alabama

The Crimson Tide are going to turn the clock back this season and absolutely run the *expletive* out of the football… and they’re going to do it very successfully. The offensive line is nasty, and they’re going to absolutely bully just about everybody up front. Defensively, this is one of the best secondaries in the country and Dallas Turner is back at LB to rush the passer.

Whether or not Alabama is playoff bound or 10-2 again in 2023 will come down to I f the QB (whoever it is) and Tommy Rees deliver when they’re asked to step up. I ultimately think that they will be asked to do very little, and when they’re asked, they’ll deliver. I have the Tide returning to Atlanta to play for the SEC Title this season.

LSU Quarterback Jayden Daniels (Photo: LSU Athletics).

LSU

This LSU roster is immaculate when you look at the starting 22 players. Harold Perkins is the best LB in the country and he returns. I think Brian Kelly is one of the five best coaches in the country and he will win a national title in Baton Rouge in the next five to seven seasons. However, the schedule is absolutely brutal, and I question the depth on this team when I compare it to the best of the best (Georgia and Bama).

I think this team loses to Florida State in the opener, with the Noles elite receivers being a bad matchup for LSU’s secondary. I have LSU taking a slight step back in 2023 and going 9-3, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they break through to Atlanta again.

Texas A&M

Texas A&M is one of the ten most talented teams in the country, and they aren’t ninth or tenth. The receiving corps is one of the best and most under appreciated units in the country. The defense is absolutely loaded. There’s formidable size up front, so there’s no excuse for D.J. Durkin’s unit to not be able to stop the run again in 2023.

Offensively, it’s been said a million times and essentially beaten to death with speculation this offseason, but it truly does come down to Bobby Petrino. If Petrino can ignite this offense and put sophomore Conner Weigman in ideal situations, this will be a top 10 or 15 team in the country. If the offense doesn’t work and Jimbo Fisher and Bobby Petrino tear each other down, this team will drastically underachieve again. I think the offense is going to work, and A&M will contend with Alabama and LSU for a trip to the SEC Championship game.

Ole Miss

This may be the most prolific offense that Lane Kiffin has ever had at Ole Miss. Quinshon Judkins is the best running back in the country, and the offensive line is rock solid. The QB options are above average by SEC standards, and the receiving options (especially at TE) are awesome.

The defense also has impressive athletes (like everyone in the SEC), and I think Pete Golding will bring minor improvements at DC. Ultimately, I have the Rebels power rated as a top 20 team in the country. This team will be 8-4 by product of playing in the SEC West, so it will likely go unnoticed just how good this team is. I do think there is a ceiling of 9 or 10 wins here.

The Arkansas offense lines up against Ole Miss in 2022 (Photo: Arkansas Athletics).

Arkansas

The Arkansas Razorbacks are going to punch teams in the mouth in 2023 with their dynamic running game. Raheim “Rocket” Sanders might be the second best running back in the country, and KJ Jefferson is as tough a runner at the QB position as anyone. The offensive line is terrific in the interior, and Sam Pittman takes pride in physically intimidating opponents.

I have the Hogs power rated as the 25th best team in the country. I think the defense will make some strides because they’ll (hopefully) stay healthier in 2023, but I think they finish behind Ole Miss when it’s said and done. Arkansas will be in the running for the best 7-5 team in the country.

Auburn

Auburn is far more talented than most people realize heading into 2023. They’re still a blue-chip ratio team, but because there’s a new QB, new HC, and new everything, most expect them to finish near the bottom of the SEC West. I still have them sixth, mainly because there’s so much new, but I think there’s a 9-win ceiling for Hugh Freeze in year one on The Plains.

I think Payton Thorne is a bottom-half QB in the SEC, and the schedule as always is littered with dogfights. I don’t see this team picking off Georgia or Alabama in Jordan-Hare this season, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re right in both games well into the second half.

Mississippi State Quarterback Will Rogers (Photo: Mississippi State Athletics).

Mississippi State

Mississippi State is not going to win 8 or 9 games in 2023. Despite the senior-laden roster and the return of prolific QB Will Rogers, the Bulldogs are going to struggle to adjust to such a drastic offensive scheme change in year one. After the death of legendary Head Coach Mike Leach, MSU is transitioning from an air raid scheme to a hybrid/zone-run scheme. Kevin Barbay comes in from App State as OC, while the Bulldogs promoted Zach Arnett (DC under Leach) to HC.

While MSU will still throw the ball downfield with Rogers, I think the O-Line and receiving corps will struggle. I still have MSU as a top 35 team in the country (as they are every season), but I think the loss of Coach Leach will cause enough of a step back for the Bulldogs to finish 7th in the SEC West this season.
